Nickerson Beach: Photographing Skimmers, Oyster Catchers, and Terns

As much as I hate hate hate driving on Long Island and don't much like getting up at 3:30 in the morning, I did both of those things a number of times during July and August to photograph the nesting birds on Nickerson Beach.

Every summer Black Skimmers,

American Oyster Catchers

and Common Terns

come to Nickerson Beach to lay their eggs and care for their chicks.

Death and Breakfast on Nickerson Beach:

Not a fun day for this chick who strayed onto the beach. Its encounter with a gull lasted only 10 seconds.
