The magnificent City Hall Station, the "Phantom Station," was the site of the opening ceremonies for the IRT, the first New York Subway, on October 27, 1904. The station was closed on December 31, 1945. Since I first visited in 2014, the skylight has been damaged by a hurricane.
Thanks to the three members of the Transit Museum education staff currently leading the tour, as well as the MTA guide, who were extremely personable, informative, and accommodating to participants' desires.
